If you are travelling to Japan you will need these free offline map apps that come with a GPS navigator for your iPhone. I have used all of them on my recent trip to Japan and they helped me plan, organize and track my location. The fact that they are free is a plus. The offline feature is a key for foreign visitors.

My Lists Selection

Once you download the app, you will be directed to the page where you will be able to create a list of your points of interest.

On the bottom of the page locate My Lists. Select My Lists and enter all your points of interest for Tokyo.

A very nice feature here is that you are able to write a note or a reminder under each entry.  It is helpful when you are planning an itinerary for each day.

Now, If you need to have more detailed information about any of your points of interest, all you have to do is select an entry and you will be directed to the next page. Here, you will be able to find out practical information about each place.

 

Map Selection

Once your entries are done, select Map option located next to My Lists at the bottom of the screen .

You will get Tokyo map marked with all the places that are on your list to visit. The zoom feature works very well on this offline map app. It has a search button on top of the page, if you need to search for places.

I used it during my visit to Tokyo and it was my favorite of the offline map apps for Tokyo. It tracked my location the entire time in Tokyo. You will not get lost with this Tokyo offline map app.

 

Discover Selection

And, finally the last feature located on the bottom of the page is called Discover. This page contains a ton of information on Tokyo: places to eat and visit. It will give you plenty of additional ideas.

Ulmon CityMaps2Go Offline Map

The app is available to download from Apple iTunes Store. Here is the link: Ulmon CityMaps2Go Offline Map The free version lets you download one free map. I have downloaded Kyoto and the surrounding areas.

My Lists

Ulmon CityMaps2Go Offline Map works pretty much the same way as Ulmon Tokyo Travel Guide and Offline Map. After you download the app, select My Lists located at the bottom of the page and enter all the places that are on your list. You can create folders and file all your favorite places into different folders. Here is a screen shot of my three folders for Kyoto, Kanazawa and Nara.

Map and Discover

After you are done making all your entries, select Map option on the bottom of the screen. All your places will be marked on the map. The search button on the top of the page lets you search for additional places.

If you select Discover option, you will have an array of places to choose from and read about.

Pocket Maps Lite

The app is available to download from Apple iTunes store. Here is the link: Pocket Maps Lite The lite version lets you download five maps for free.

After you download the app, you will be presented with an option to select your maps. All the countries are organized in alphabetical order, and you need to navigate to the section that you are interested in. As you can see from the screenshot, there are over 300 maps available for Japan. Keep in mind that you can only download five maps in Pocket Maps Lite version.

When you are done selecting the maps, they will be all grouped together on a separate page. In order to open your map, select the icon map located on the left side. If you select an icon with “i ” button, you will be directed to another page where you can download information from Wikipedia and download more detailed version of the same map from the pro version which is not free.

The search button on the top of the page lets you scroll down through different points of interest. You have an option of selecting each item and saving it to your map. There is an option to bookmark it as well.
